How durable are the NPH-1 and other Meshtastic radios?

The NPH-1 is sealed and metal-bodied: its enclosure is CNC-machined from solid aluminum, sealed with gaskets and O-rings, and internally tested to IP67, which means dust-tight and able to survive 30 minutes under 1 m of water. The NPH-1 charges through a waterproof USB-C port and ships with a machined sealing cap installed. Of the 33 other radios under $500 in our open Meshtastic tier list, only one, the Atlavox Beacon Solar, also has a metal case; the rest are plastic, 3D-printed or bare boards, which keeps them lighter and cheaper. Just above that price, the $500 AT-Labs RM-1 uses an aluminum extrusion rated IP67 and freeze-proof.

How far will the NPH-1 and other Meshtastic radios actually reach?

An NPH-1 typically reaches one to two miles through timber, several miles with a clear line of sight, and ten miles or more from high ground. Like every Meshtastic radio, the NPH-1's range depends more on terrain and antenna height than on the radio itself. The NPH-1 transmits at 22 dBm (158 mW), the same power as 31 of the 37 radios in our tier list, through an external LoRa antenna on an SMA connector, so a larger antenna can add range. Every radio on the mesh also relays messages, so each radio you add extends coverage for the whole group.

How long does the battery last on the NPH-1 and other Meshtastic radios?

The NPH-1 runs 2–4 weeks on a single charge in typical use, from a built-in 5200 mAh Li-ion battery. Runtime depends on how often the NPH-1 reports its position, how much traffic it relays and its power settings. The NPH-1 recharges through a waterproof USB-C port; the battery is not user-removable. For comparison, 12 of the 19 other ready-made radios with a battery in our tier list carry 2,000 mAh or less.

Where and how are the NPH-1 and other Meshtastic radios made?

The NPH-1 is designed, machined and assembled in Illinois: Delta Plus Proto CNC-machines each aluminum enclosure in-house, then coats, assembles and function-checks every unit before it ships. The circuit board, built around the RAK4630 module from RAKwireless, is the only part made outside the USA. Most Meshtastic radios share that kind of core: 28 of the 37 radios in our tier list use the same Semtech SX1262 radio chip, and 8 of the 37 give the USA as their origin while 23 give China.

How much does an NPH-1 Meshtastic radio cost?

The NPH-1 costs $249 with its 5200 mAh Li-ion pack, a machined sealing cap and a bolt-on belt clip. The 6" flexible LoRa antenna, the stubby Bluetooth antenna, the 1 m waterproof USB-C cable and the Zip Plate are each an add-on you can tick in the same order; any standard USB-C cable charges it with the cap off.
